After being under lockdown for so long perhaps a little ‘spring cleaning’ of our dwellings will be necessary. Did you know that herbs have a long history of use for their disinfectant capabilities? Herbs offer antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. Here are a couple of easy recipes to put our fresh herbs to great use.

Air Freshener

You will need:

4 tbsp Sage (or if you have Rosemary, Lavender, Mint or even Thyme)

8 tbsp crumbled Bay Leaves

225ml Witch Hazel

What to do:

Chop the sage coarsely and tear the bay into pieces. Place into a jar and cover with Witch Hazel. Leave the bottle in a dark place, for 3 days. Strain off the liquid and pour it into a spray bottle. Use as necessary.

Minty Bathroom and Surface Cleaner:

You will need:

1 cup of white vinegar

½ cup of water

1 cup of chopped mint (peppermint is a good choice)

5 tsp. Baking soda

What to do:

Place the baking soda and the water into a clean bottle and stir or shake well till it’s dissolved.

Add the vinegar to the water mixture water and then add in the chopped mint. Shake it well.

Set aside for about 3 days to infuse.

Put liquid into a spray bottle and use this to clean bathroom surfaces and sinks.

Mint Wooden – floor wash.

Use a strong mint tea mixed with an equal amount of white vinegar.

Diluted this 1:32 with warm water in a bucket. This can be used as a wash for wooden floors. Using a dampened cloth, wipe down the floors and leave to dry.
